Gunman Opens Fire on Sukhbir Singh Badal at Golden Temple: Attack Successfully Foiled

Gunman Opens Fire on Sukhbir Singh Badal

A shocking incident unfolded this morning at Amritsar’s Golden Temple when a man attempted to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. The attack occurred as Badal was seated near the temple’s entrance, performing penance. Quick-thinking bystanders overpowered the assailant, averting any harm. Authorities are currently probing the attacker’s motives.

Sukhbir Singh Badal, 62, has been serving as a sewadar (volunteer) at the Golden Temple as part of a tankhah (religious punishment) imposed by the Akal Takht Sahib. The directive was issued for “mistakes” committed during the SAD’s governance in Punjab between 2007 and 2017. As part of this penance, Badal and other SAD leaders have been assigned tasks like washing utensils, cleaning shoes, and performing other services at gurdwaras, including the Golden Temple.

According to eye witnesses, the shooter, identified as Narain Singh from Gurdaspur district, approached Badal and suddenly pulled out a firearm. However, a vigilant bystander intervened, grabbing the attacker’s hand before he could take aim. The bullet missed Badal and those nearby. The assailant was subdued on the spot and later taken into custody. Authorities are investigating the incident and seeking to uncover the shooter’s motives.

For the past two days, Badal, wheelchair-bound due to a fractured leg, has been performing his duties at Guru Ram Das Dwar, one of the temple’s main gates. Dressed in the blue sewadar uniform and carrying a spear, he has been managing temple entry during his one-hour daily service.
